Can A Border Collie Be Registered With Abca And Akc
Why do we choose to have our puppies Dual Registered?
Echo and Rogue
Some breeders will sell "unregistered" puppies, saying they don't "want to get hung up with the organizational dues thing." But what are you purchasing? Do you really know what you are buying? The simple answer to that is, you don't know for sure.
Registration to the American Kennel Club (AKC) and / or the American Border Collie Association (ABCA) helps to insure the integrity of our beloved Border Collie breed. By registering to these two organizations, C2C Border Collies is certifying the pedigree and lineage of your puppy. (It's like tracking your own family ancestry; you want it to be accurate.) For example, you will see that they are not "Inbred" (which means bred to a sibling, or a parent), causing potential hereditary problems. These organizations maintain strict standards for responsible breeding. The AKC registers many purebreds. The ABCA is specific to the Border Collies.
The AKC, while originally sponsoring conformation and obedience shows, now offers sporting competitions, like agility. Although, at one time, the traditional look of the Border Collie was AKC's focus, now all colors are considered equally in competition within the working class category of dogs, whether show or obedience. AKC donates a good portion of your membership fees toward canine health research, responsible breeding, humane dog ownership and the ASPCA.
The ABCA focuses on the Border Collies' working ability and does not consider "traditional" colors and conformation as a priority. They promote the integrity of the herding instinct, intelligence and athleticism of the Border Collie. We all know this is the original purpose of the amazing Border Collie! For that reason, the ABCA sponsors many sheep herding trials, agility, flyball ball and Frisbee competitions. The ABCA wants to preserve the Border Collies' original purpose and to promote the healthy, active dog they were bred to be. (*Let it be known that, if your Border Collie earns an AKC Confirmation Champion Title, you will be required to relinquish your ABCA registration, according to the rules of ABCA.)
So, now that you know why registration is important, should you choose to keep both registrations or maintain just one? We like to give you the choice. Or, like us, we choose both! Belonging to both professional breed organizations will make you a part of helping maintain the registries that made your new Border Collie puppy the wonderful, healthy, devoted friend and lifetime companion you expected!
